Charities and Services Ballots – September 2012

BALLOT #1—-PASSED!

Service:

The Mazza Museum is requesting Findlay Service League members to participate and volunteer in the museum’s Funday Sunday program.  Funday Sunday is an afternoon at The Mazza Museum that has storytelling, art stations, music, refreshments, shopping, and special guests.  The event is held the first Sunday afternoon from 1:30-3:30 of each month (October – April).  The event has brought an average of 300-400 people per event and they are in search of additional volunteers.  The request is for 2-5 volunteers per month that will fill in at a station (provided by Mazza organizers).  The volunteer times will range from 1:00-4:00 (or shifts if necessary).  Some of our volunteers may be asked to help with creating games for children’s participation based on the theme for each month.  Mazza Museum is excited to continue to work with our organization and is interested in our help with every session.

C&S recommends that FSL supports this request by filling in a minimum of two slots per month including a chair for the project.  FSL would propose that this be an ongoing service project.

Rationale:

1.       FSL would be supporting an organization that provides a wonderful experience to area children.

2.      FSL would be assisting a program that we have supported the last few years.

3.      It provides a much needed service opportunity for our members on a monthly basis.

BALLOT #2—-PASSED!

Service:

Coats for Christmas project is looking for volunteers to be responsible for a collection site and coordinate dropping off the collection boxes, picking up donated coats from the site, and taking them to City Laundry from November 23rd – 30th.  Boxes to be placed at the sites — will be picked up at the United Way office between November 19th – 21st.  This is a project with Hancock Alumni Leadership Association and generally collects 2,500-3,000 coats per year.

C&S recommends providing volunteers to support this project.

Rationale:

1.       FSL would be working with another organization in Hancock County.

2.      FSL would be providing volunteers for a drive that benefits many people in our area.

BALLOT #3—-PASSED!

Service:

The Humane Society & SPCA of Hancock County is requesting volunteers to assist with two different opportunities.  The first opportunity consists of someone coming in and walking every adoptable dog once a week or once every other week.  The walker can start at 9 or 10 a.m. and it usually takes about 2-4 hours, depending on the number of dogs.  Walking the dogs consists of taking them out of their cages and into the yard for much needed exercise and people interaction.  The second option is to assist with their Pet Pals Program.  This is every afternoon, Tuesday-Friday from 1-4 p.m.  Kids 12 years old and up are permitted and you play with the cats and dogs in the designated playrooms.  There is also a Saturday option if this would work better.  They are really looking for people that love animals to help relieve the two women that come in every week.  The Humane Society cares for an average of 3,000 animals a year and does not receive any financial support for any national organization.

C & S recommends providing up to one volunteer to the Humane Society.

Rationale:

  1. FSL has not provided service to this organization before.
  2. FSL would provide a much-needed service to the lonely dogs that are living there.
